Understanding Metal Cladding and Roofing
Master the Fundamentals of Metal Roofing & Cladding

CPD Overview: Understanding Metal Cladding and Roofing
Gain a clear understanding of how Steel, Aluminium, Zinc, and Copper perform across a wide range of architectural applications—helping you specify with confidence.
This CPD session explores the fundamentals of metal cladding and roofing, from historic origins to modern innovations. Discover how to choose the right material for your project by comparing key characteristics like durability, profiles available, aesthetics, cost, and sustainability.
Understanding
Metal Roofing and Cladding

This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021:
Project Initiation and Conceptual Design
PC24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations.
PC28 Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project.
Detailed Design and Construction Documentation
PC39 Be able to integrate the material selection, structural and construction systems established in the conceptual design into the detailed design and documentation.
At the end of this CPD presentation, you should be able to:

- Outline the historical timeline of each metal and its evolution to present day use in metal cladding and roofing.
- Identify different paint and coating systems for steel, aluminium, zinc and copper for roof and wall sheeting.
- Explain the specific reasons for the durability of each metal and approximate their life expectancies.
- Describe the sustainable characteristics of steel, aluminium, zinc and copper.
- Identify available profiles for roofing and cladding in steel, aluminium, zinc and copper.
- Compare the approximate costing for installation of roofing/cladding in steel, aluminium, zinc and copper.
- Explain the correct design and specification of the 4 metals and suitability for projects based on their characteristics.
